In Madison, measurable snow can appear as early as October, with the average first inch typically landing by late November — right in the heart of the Big Ten's most consequential stretch. Rather than ranking the "snowiest" stadiums, the real story is how snow reshapes the sport itself: less finesse, more physicality, and an edge for teams already used to playing in it.
At Altitude, the Air Is Part of the Home-Field Advantage

This might be the most compelling weather story in college football, because unlike wind or rain, altitude comes with hard scientific backing.
War Memorial Stadium in Laramie sits at 7,220 feet — the highest Division I football venue in the country. Folsom Field sits at roughly 5,400 feet. At that elevation, oxygen is less available, which increases the relative intensity of any effort, lowers maximal oxygen uptake, and slows recovery between high-intensity plays — exactly the demand football places on the body.
A 2026 study examining 14,874 FBS games from 2001–2023 found that teams playing at higher altitude than their opponents' home environment saw a statistically significant boost: roughly a 3.69 percentage-point increase in win probability and a 1.5–3 point scoring-margin edge, growing stronger as the altitude gap widened.
At Folsom Field or War Memorial Stadium, the home-field advantage isn't just in the crowd. It's in the air.

Southern Heat Can Test a Team Before the Fourth Quarter

Early-season kickoffs across the South can still feel like summer, and the physiological toll is well documented. In one study, players in roughly 109°F conditions showed higher core and muscle temperatures, a 7% drop in total distance covered, and a 26% decline in high-intensity running compared to temperate conditions.
Dehydration compounds the problem, and while heat acclimatization helps, high humidity can blunt its effectiveness — a relevant detail for the humid Southeast. That's part of why the NCAA recommends 10–14 days of gradual heat acclimatization before full-contact preseason work.
This isn't only a player issue. A 2024 study placing sensors throughout a Southeastern stadium found some seating sections exceeded official heat-alert thresholds — at times registering hotter than nearby weather stations — with heat-related illness accounting for a meaningful share of game-day medical cases.
Rain Doesn't Just Make Football Messy — It Can Change It

And sometimes weather doesn't change how a game is played — it changes whether it's played at all. In 2019, a Washington–Cal game was delayed 2 hours and 39 minutes for lightning, following NCAA guidance that requires waiting at least 30 minutes after the last strike before resuming play.
